Tug of War: Marijuana’s 2016 Ballot Win Vs. An Incoming Trump Administration

No matter how one may feel about the results, Election Night 2016 was a significant and unprecedented win for the marijuana lobby…or was it? Voters in three states (California, Massachusetts and Nevada) approved recreational marijuana use and several other states (Florida, North Dakota and Arkansas) passed provisions for medical use. Other ballot measures failed with a razor-thin margin of collective objection, suggesting that there may be some wiggle room in future races. What kind of future, however, does recreational or even medical marijuana use have under a Trump Presidency? The results at the top of the ballot may wind up superseding current and future state-decisions and halting any forward momentum in the decades-long pursuit of legalization.
